High-res: Heard but not seen
Speaker technology has advanced in leaps and bounds during the past dacade.
We´ve seen in this column that you can achieve 5.1 sound from just one pair of speakers and even dynamic sound from a lamp speaker. Now comes the invisible speaker.
SONUS, a high-end-German speaker manufacturer, collaborated with architects to build a speaker that can hidden in the wall.
The result is the SONUS Intara-P room acoustic system, which basically turns walls and ceilings into sound sources.
Clients in Germany include BMW, GlaxoSmithKline, Siemens, and IBM.
Each speaker comes as a soundboard- the smallest one measures 61.5cm x 61.5cm; the largest is 160cm x 61.5cm.
Attached to the back of the boeard is an exciter, which is an electronic magnetic device that converts mechanical energy to drive the panel board,
which changes it to music signals.
The speakers still have to be connected to an amplifier, so ensure that the designers have speaker cables recessed into the walls.
With sensitivity at 82 dB, you might think a powerful 300-Watt amp was required, but I tried it with a 25-Watt amp
and it worked amazingly well.
Because the boards are larger than regular cone speakers, energy is dispersed more efficiently, so there´s no need for a powerful amp.
The Intara P-20 (which is the smallest panel, at 61.5cm x 61.5cm) is priced from HK$ 11,800 per piece. The largest panel, the Intara P-120, costs
HK$ 43,600 for one.
The speakers can be fixed like any plaster board, although it´s necessary to add a thick layer of foam to the wall before this is done. Then the Intara sound board can be plastered, wallpapered or painted.
My initial reservations about the sound quality after painting were unfounded: the sound was clear and clean.
Playing Jean Michel Jarre´s Oxygene, which I specially chose, had my hair standing on end. Every nuance could be heard and it wasn´t tinny or unidirectional, but warm and comfortable.
Provided you have the money, these speakers make perfect sense in Hong Kong´s cramped living space.
